Crossing Inventory

A highway-rail crossing is a location where a public highway, road, street, or private roadway, including associated sidewalks and pathways, crosses one or more railroad tracks. All such crossings are reported by railroads and state Department of Transportations to the FRA on Form FRA F 6180.71 U.S. DOT Crossing Inventory Form. Each location has an assigned U.S. DOT Grade Crossing Identification Number, or crossing ID. Each Form 6180.71 filed for a crossing ID details the location and classification information, railroad information, highway and pathway traffic control device information, physical characteristics, and/or public highway information. Data for crossings is provided by railroads that meet the reporting criteria outlined in CFR 49 Part 234.3 Application and Responsibility for Compliance.
Reports are updated with new data on the first of the month. For a crosswalk of legacy site reports to this new site, please see the Report Cross-Reference.
The reports available from this page contain canned reports featuring summary level data. Each report displays data, with the ability to filter by railroad, state, county, city, crossing type (public or private), crossing position (at grade, railroad over or railroad under), crossing purpose (highway, pedestrian pathway or pedestrian station), railroad class, parent railroad, holding company, and FRA Safety Management Team (SMT). For definitions, please see the Report Filter Glossary page.
